April is all about Debbie McDonald & "The Big Mare" Brentina!

It's said that "April showers bring May flowers" but for Dressage fans everywhere, April will be bringing one of our favorite DQ's & her "Big Mare" to Las Vegas for World Cup this month!

Miz Biz has long been a fan of Debbie & Brentina so it was nice that HorseStock got the call for a pretty picture of the pair.

We'll be in Vegas Baby keeping a visual record of all the hap's.

Spring Happenings

Washington State Photographer, Wendi Ross, had her lovely pair of driving horses extended for use on the http://www.kstewart.com/ banner.

Kara has written for a TON of equestrian magazines as well as various main stream projects and books. She's located in Colorado and always has something interesting going on, on the web!

More of Wendi's work is on deck to appear in National Geographic Magazine. Maybe she'll share a little with us after the publishing probation period is over. ;)

Ojai Photographer, April Visel, had one of her conceptional images find it's way into the March issue of Practical Horseman Magazine to address the issues of cancer in horses.

April is just returning from Scottsdale, Arizona where she's been covering the big Arabian show there for Arabian Horse World Magazine.

How are you gonna make it in the current economic climate?

Ohhh Myyy Goshh! The Circus is in town and will they have enough entertainment to draw a crowd?

Hey, it's the same with editorial magazines, product advertisers, and any other medium where you need to catch people's eyes and attention.

Just like the picture here, it's bright and colorful; it's composed great but where are the people? Will those stands get filled? Not likely if you've delegated the ground clean up crew to also fill in as the hire wire act. Sound familiar? It should.

Today I see staffs in droves shooting pictures for their ads and publications. Some of you can actually walk that high wire but most just try to fill in while also doing your jobs and the jobs of staff that have been laid off. It's a tall order.

Miz Biz knows budgets are tight and she just sees this getting worse for the next couple of years. So instead of thinking you have no alternative but to take the burden on yourself, take the time to seek out help with professionally crafted images and Miz Biz will work with you on your budget.

Of course, don't come looking for $1 stock (that's just poor manners on your part - Shutterstock is where you'll want to go for those types of snap shots) and you can come looking for a trade if you've got a product worth trading for (I'd personally love to hear from the folks who produce Conquer) as many of us do own horses and use many products currently on the market.

All in all, saddle up folks -- it's gonna be a heck of a ride!

Leslie Heemsbergen on Horse Care Magazine

Miz Biz is out in sunny SoCal so there's no snow for her, but for a lot of you the joy of the holidays has now been replaced with the longing for an early Spring. So here's Leslie's latest cover to remind you all that snow really is beautiful when you're looking at a warmly lit barn. :)

Happy New Year! Miz Biz'z resolution is to be more timely with her updates. But you gotta know that the photogs for HorseStock.biz are always out shooting for you!

Elite Dressage Gear from Dover

Ohhh, the summer may be gone, but the memories and gear live on!

Sharon Fibelkorn enjoyed photographing the Summer Olympic Dressage Trials. One of those pretty pictures is currently gracing the cover of Dover's Elite Dressage Edition.

Leslie Heemsbergen in Dover Saddlery Catalog

One of the prettiest farrier pictures ever seen was captured by photographer Leslie Heemsbergen. It graces the inside cover of the current Dover Saddlery Catalog at the lower right hand side of the page.

Leslie quietly goes about her work as a photographer putting on film (and file) unique moments that we can all relate to but we seldom see if left on our own. Miz Biz is happy she's one of our selected shooters. :)

Nancy McCallum Featured in Back In The Saddle Catalog

Hot off the presses, and because I always forget to take the time to enjoy the moment, here's the latest offering from Nancy McCallum.

The handsome Andalusian stallion, Savino, graces the current cover of Back In The Saddle catalog. It's not Nancy's first sale with us, but it is one of the prettiest. Nancy is an established calendar shooter and photographs editorial and commercial subjects for HorseStock.biz.

Stay tuned, and I'll be diligent and share Who's Shooting What on a regular basis.

Miz Biz heads to BookExpo America in L.A. this week!

Probably the bestest publishing event in the country is the BEA event and Miz Biz is heading there on Friday, Saturday and maybe even Sunday to research ... connect with ... and just have a great time with all the folks in the world of publishing! How sad to see May (and Spring) leave but what a great way to usher Summer in!

The Price of Pretty

I live in Southern California so EVERYTHING out here is expensive! People have money and they're willing to purchase the best horses and the best tack because they know that not only is there a standard when they go to the show, but that they HAVE TO catch the judge's eye or they'll never place.

So goes it with pictures. The horse world isn't stupid. They know a finely crafted picture from a snapshot and they're not going to spend their money on a nominal product. That's why we have the 'Novelty Gallery.' This gallery is comprised of arty and custom crafted pictures so no, it's not cheap. But yes, purchasing the use of one of these pictures will set your product ahead of the pack.

But, getting back to SoCal, if you want to live on the beach, it's gonna cost you. You can't show up with a couple hundred dollars in your pocket and think someone will sell you a home that clearly costs more. And so it is with photographs -- but the place to start is justifying your Budget. Once you get that approval, you can look to getting better and better pictures ultimately growing your own product. So we'd love to help. We know that setting an actual Photo Budget is a new concept for a lot of folks because pictures have always been pretty darn easy to come by. But when you start looking at the shots that took days on location, people in specific gear, quality horses and riders, light that's just right then you'll appreciate our pricing.

Further, the trend now is for publishers to ask for ongoing print rights. Well, technically, every time a picture gets printed/used it should be making money. So the other thing you all have to think about is how long you are asking to use that picture and then divide that number into our proposed fee. We're agreeable to work with the current market but we're not agreeable at pricing that was 10 years ago for a one time use only. Again, this is something you guys should bring to the attention of your bean counters who set the Budget.

Ours is a complicated business and there are no set standards so don't be afraid to email or call. We'll chat ... and maybe we can work out a deal and maybe we'll just come up with things to think about but knowledge is power and the more we can talk about our business, the better it's going to be for both parties.

Our Featured Photographer is April Visel, and you'll be magically transported to her site if you click on the picture above.

So Many Good Pictures and So Much Time

Well, obviously this picture is not of a horse. It's actually of my cat, aka The Big Cat, and he's a stray that came to me as an indoor/outdoor kitty. Now, some years later I've decided after this last incident that he should be an indoor kitty only.

But I want to talk about the picture ... it's a good photo to document my cat's latest adventure. It's is not a good photo for sale for the following reasons: the background is full of crap, it's not really well composed, it needs to be color balanced and it was shot with a small camera so the file size is not very large. I suspect we won't be seeing this shot in any good cat magazines on the stands in the future.

The point I'm going for is that there's a world of really wonderful photos available. And there's a world of working photographers who'd love to sell those pictures and work on assignments to create really nice visual content to go with the good stuff that writers are coming out with.

So, much like the cat picture, I'm reminded of a movie ... The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Woops! Email Hijack!

Sometimes I really love the web and sometimes I really hate smart people with too much time on their hands on the web.

My miz_biz email address has been hijacked by spammers! I got spam ... from me? What's up with that? So the riderless horse is something no one wants to see during a competition and that's how I'm feeling about my email address -- it's loose and it's not as simple as catching that riderless horse.

So, being the communicator I think I am, I wanted to let the horse community that I've changed my email for requests and such on the site. As for any arriving spam to the rest of you, feel free to delete and enjoy the rest of your day. :) The real "Miz Biz" will be burning CD's and getting pictures out to clients today.
